The “718” paintings, the first part of an ongoing study, focus on aspects of the city that were once vital but are now disappearing as a result of inexorable decay or the onslaught of development. Talese is drawn to such subjects by the way they catch the sun and sky, occupy space in a monumental manner, and by a fascination with urban social history as seen through its structures. She paints on site recording the scene during several visits at the same time of day which gives her time to observe and absorb the spirit of a place.
